| Mazda's replacement battery is
a wet cell and is dangerous in rear installations.
Wet cell batteries can explode on impact. Other companies may try
to sell you a "gel cell" battery similar to the original Panasonic batteries
used by Mazda. As we all know, these batteries are useless after
only 2 or 3 deep discharges and they need to be vented just like a wet
cell.
The WestCo battery is a completely sealed, maintenance free, gas recombinant (No venting), AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat), Deep Cycle battery with more cranking power than Mazda's OEM or replacement battery and can withstand over 400 deep discharge cycles. It can also be rapid charged. Something you can't do with a gel cell. AGM batteries are very resistant to vibration and harsh environments, e.g. racing. AGM Batteries don't explode or even leak on impact, so they are very safe. They can even be shipped air freight as they are not considered hazardous and are not required to carry a hazardous materials label. Gel cell electrolytes can break down under harsh conditions which reduces their power output and useful life. While there are other AGM batteries on the market, the WestCo Model 12v33 is in my opinion (arrived at after much research on the subject) the best battery available for the Miata.
